A Mahadasha is the main (big) planetary period in Vedic astrology. Each is ruled by one planet for a fixed number of years, and it sets the overall theme of that stretch of your life. It is the largest level of the dasha system.
How long it lasts
In Vimshottari Dasha each planet's Mahadasha has a set length - for example Sun 6 years, Moon 10, Saturn 19. Together they make a 120-year cycle.
What is inside it
Each Mahadasha is divided into smaller Antardashas ruled by other planets, which add detail to the timing.
